Just finished reading a book that is a fictionalized account of an orphan that came to Canada thanks to the work of Dr. Thomas John Barnardo (the book itself is a fake journal of a Canadian girl and her thoughts about this orphan joining their family). Barnardo was a doctor in London in the late 19th and early 20th century that spearheaded an organisation which sent more than 60,000 (I have difficulty believing that number!) orphans of London to colonies of Britain of which Canada was the main recipient. There they worked as farmhands, amongst other things.
Was Barnardo considered a hopeless, bleeding heart liberal during his time? That question is not entirely hypothetical, as one could read the archives of newspapers at the time to find out. I find the story quite fascinating and inspiring.
