Political Correctness and Renaming

The First World War was known as the Great War until Second World War. I’m not sure how Second World War was referred to at the beginning. George Bush senior, or GB 41, was simply George Bush to the Western World until his son became the president in 2000. Here then are two examples of how events after the fact retroactively change the name of something already popular known by another moniker. And yet, in these two examples, there wasn’t a campaign to change their names. It was done simply to avoid confusion and not add to it. I don’t think the same could be said for womyn. And yet, perhaps there are other examples that are mistakenly thought of as caused by political correctness which are in fact, created by a necessity of two titles referring to the same thing.
