This is a really interesting, if depressing, situation. The first time that Rushdie had a fatwa put on his head some leftists wondered if he hadn’t deserved it in some way (the first few paragraphs of this piece explain the situation quite well). What will be the reaction of the media and intellectuals this time round? One thing that I could wish for, in advance, is that those who decide to speak of the hurt feelings of some muslims also take the time to describe in great detail the incredible limits placed on Rushdie’s life that these kinds of threats cause. Me thinks not too many of them would wish to walk a minute in his shoes.
